| Resource Title | Understanding recreational athletes' perception to engage in sports and physical activity after ACL reconstruction |
| Date Issued | June 2025 |
| Abstract | The perception and readiness during rehabilitation vary among individuals, with several factors influencing the decision of recreational athletes to re-engage in sports and physical activity after ACL reconstruction. This qualitative research provides an in-depth perspective on the experiences that shape their perceptions. Using a qualitative case study approach establishes conceptual clarity on the group phenomenon perception of recreational athletes. The informants of this study are recreational athletes who are currently rehabilitating in a physical therapy clinic in Quezon City, who have undergone ACL reconstruction surgery, and should be 9 to 24 months post-operation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Three categories emerged to provide answers to the objective: (1) Conquering Fear of Re-Injury and Gaining Confidence in Movement, (2) Navigating Rehabilitation – Support, Struggles, and Adaptation, (3) Cognitive Reframing of Injury Experience. These findings revealed how they define physical and psychological readiness to establish goals and promote a goal-oriented mindset, identifying the facilitators and barriers from their experiences. Their narratives also expressed how strength and conditioning practices have significantly influenced physical perception and confidence in movement. The informants described a renewed appreciation for sports and physical activity, viewing them as essential for performance and overall well-being. Their reframed perception promotes long-term, habit-forming, holistic development, highlighting the universal importance of physical activity in enhancing quality of life across various life phases. |
