Resource Title Effects of a six-week basketball skills cross-training on the 100-meter freestyle swim time of male collegiate swimmers
Date Issued June 2025
Abstract This study explored the effects of a six-week basketball skills cross-training on the athletic performance of male collegiate swimmers, specifically focusing on swim times and distance per stroke (DPS) in the 100-meter freestyle event. Despite the increasing interest in cross-training, there remains a significant gap in research regarding its direct impact on swimming performance parameters. This quasi-experimental study involves 17 male collegiate swimmers, aged 18 to 23, who were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Over a 6-week period, the experimental group engaged in a structured basketball training program that occurred two times a week, while the control group continued with their regular training routine. Pre- and post-tests were conducted to measure swim times and DPS. Data analysis utilized paired sample t-tests to determine significant differences in performance parameters before and after the intervention. The findings aim to provide valuable insights for coaches and athletes, enhancing training program planning and contributing to the understanding of training transfer effects in swimming. This research underscores the potential of basketball as an effective cross-training modality to improve swimming performance and offers a foundation for future studies in this area.
