| Abstract | Coffee is a prominent source of caffeine, a psychoactive stimulant in the Philippines, often consumed by college students for enhanced alertness and focus. However, excessive dosage could induce sleep deprivation, which could negatively affect student-athletes who deal with both athletic and academic demands. This study examined the effects of caffeine in coffee on sleep quality, quantity, and general alertness in the day of collegiate student-athletes. It utilized a randomized, single-blind, crossover design with a sample of 17 undergraduate student-athletes from the badminton varsity team. They were given decaffeinated (DEC) and caffeinated (CAF) beverages, consumed for 5 days each, with a 9-day washout phase in between. They were also provided questionnaires comprised of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Mood, Alertness, and Physical Sensations Scale (MAPSS) to measure sleep and alertness, respectively. Data underwent paired and independent t-tests, utilizing the α < 0.05 significance level. The results indicated that there were no statistically significant effects of caffeine in regular morning coffee on the sleep quality, quantity, and general alertness of collegiate student- athletes (p ≥ 0.05). However, 70% experienced poor sleep quality, and 87% had a lack of sleep duration. There was also a moderate (4.66 ± 1.04) level of alertness, which may have been influenced by reduced sleep quality and quantity. Training schedule, academic workload, and athletic physiological adaptations may have had an influence on sleep and alertness. Ultimately, these suggested that caffeine and coffee may not have crucial concerns for the sleep and alertness of collegiate student-athletes, rather than their academic, athletic, and lifestyle challenges. |
