| Resource Title | Filipino parents’ perspective on the participation of their children in a non-professional youth volleyball academy |
| Date Issued | June 2025 |
| Abstract | Recognizing the increasing popularity of youth sports and their critical role in addressing public health concerns by promoting physical activity, this research aims to understand parental perspectives to inform and improve academy operations. An embedded mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection. A survey questionnaire, adapted from Bonal et al. (2020), was administered to a sample of parents. This was supplemented by in-depth interviews with parents of players enrolled in a selected volleyball academy in the Philippines. Both methods were analyzed separately, and the integrated findings reveal that parental decisions are primarily driven by factors such as coaching quality (particularly kindness), the academy's focus on holistic child development (beyond just athletic skill), location convenience (though this is more critical for lower-income families), and the social environment. While facilities and information were rated lower in overall importance, poor facilities and a lack of clear communication were identified as significant deterrents to enrollment. The study concludes that sports academies in the Philippines should prioritize creating a nurturing environment that emphasizes both athletic and personal growth, with a strong focus on positive coach-child relationships and effective communication with parents. These findings provide actionable insights for academies to refine their marketing strategies, enhance service quality, and ultimately increase youth participation in sports. |
