| Resource Title | Online Bahay ni Kuya: understanding participatory culture and pakikipagkapwa among PBB Celebrity Collab Edition audiences in r/pinoybigbrother |
| Date Issued | 8 June 2026 |
| Abstract | As Pinoy Big Brother discussions increasingly extend into digital communities, audiences have become active participants in shaping meanings and narratives circulating online. Guided by Jenkins’ (2019) concept of participatory culture in a networked society and Kobayashi et al.’s (2024) concept of pakikipagkapwa, this study explored how audiences of PBB Celebrity Collab Edition reflected pakikipagkapwa in their participatory culture within the subreddit r/pinoybigbrother. The study examined the subreddit and audience profiles, audiences’ participatory practices, and how the elements of pakikipagkapwa emerged within participation. Using a multi-method qualitative design, the study combined retrospective observational netnography and in-depth interviews with subreddit participants. Findings revealed that audiences engaged in collective meaning-making, content production, and moral negotiations surrounding the show. Pakikipagkapwa emerged through empathy, protective engagement, humor, relational accountability, and collective defense of both housemates and fellow users, while participation was shaped by emotionally charged events, fandom loyalties, cultural values, and ideological beliefs. The findings suggest that participatory culture within Filipino digital communities is deeply relational, culturally situated, and continuously negotiated through platformed interaction and collective discourse. |
