Resource Title Sustaining the spectacle: a textual analysis of Heart Evangelista’s Instagram narratives
Date Issued 2026
Abstract This study examines the construction of celebrity identity through the Instagram narratives of Heart Evangelista, analyzing how her personas are produced and maintained across social media and digital platforms. Grounded in Guy Debord’s theory of the spectacle (2014), Gordon Douglas’ concept of glamour (2009), and Mark Deuze’s notion of media life (2011), the study conceptualizes celebrity as a mediated system where identity is continuously produced through representation, circulation, and audience engagement. Using textual analysis, it examines selected Instagram posts, captions, audience comments, and related media articles to identify recurring narratives, signifying elements, and underlying discourses. Findings show that each narrative is constructed through distinct yet interconnected visual and textual signifiers. Across all narratives, glamour is seen as a tool for the upkeep of the spectacle. The study finds a strong harmony between these platforms, as both contribute to the stabilization of Evangelista’s multiple identities within a continuous media system. Ultimately, the research concludes that her celebrity does not rely on a singular persona but on multiple coexisting spectacles that collectively produce a coherent economy of glamour, allowing her to sustain visibility, desirability, and cultural relevance in contemporary media life.
