Resource Title The Filipino issue: the Filipino identity on the TikTok discourse of Vogue Philippines’ “Once On This Island” cover image
Date Issued July 2026
Abstract The Filipino Issue is a descriptive analysis on the construction of Filipino identity through the TikTok discourses generated from Vogue Philippines September 2025 cover image titled, Once On This Island. Using a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA), this qualitative study analyzed the connection between the cover image and the online videos and comments from TikTok. Specifically, it looks at the cover image, two commentaries, and fourteen comments purposeful selected and classified according through a two-part coding form. Findings suggests that TikTok has been a vital site for mediamorphosis, where proactive digital natives co-creates and joins into the discourses that challenge traditional media representations. The research labels three constructed Filipino identities from the TikTok discourse namely, identity of physicality that depicts the brown skin tone of Filipinos, identity of origin that refers to Filipinos being water people in an archipelagic nation, and identity of character that portrays how Filipinos are highlighted to be subjects of power and authority instead of passive subjects of appreciation. Overall, the research encapsulates these constructed identities as a collaborative effort and alignment of both the institutional media and digital natives in active TikTok discourse. Hence, it also opens up and challenges misrepresentation to see Filipinos in a position of power that can be globally recognized.
