Resource Title Effects of outdoor activities to the mental health of women’s collegiate and professional athletes
Date Issued January 2026
Abstract Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, particularly for female collegiate and professional athletes who face dual pressures of academic and athletic performance. This study examined the effectiveness of outdoor activities in improving perceived stress, self-efficacy, mindfulness, and well-being among athletes. Using a longitudinal research design, ten participants—five student-athletes and five professional players—were assessed at two points: before and after participation in outdoor activities. Validated instruments, including the Perceived Stress Questionnaire, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), and Subjective Well-Being Scale, were administered through online surveys. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests to determine changes in mental health indicators. Results showed that participants initially reported low perceived stress and moderate to high levels of self-efficacy, mindfulness, and well-being. Post-intervention analysis revealed no statistically significant differences across all indicators, although slight numerical improvements in self-efficacy and well-being were observed. These findings suggest that short-term exposure to outdoor activities may offer subtle psychological benefits but is insufficient to produce measurable changes. Therefore, it is recommended that athletes be provided with long-term and sustained exposure to outdoor activities to fully realize their positive effects on mental health. This study contributes to local literature by highlighting the potential of nature-based interventions as part of holistic wellness programs for female athletes in the Philippines.
