| Abstract | Abstract The project was titled “Technology Foresight for Abaca Denim through Scenario Building”. The study focused on the potential of the innovation to penetrate the global market and save the Philippine textile industry. The study was done through intensive research and interviews to understand the factors that can create a competitive advantage of the technology. The Philippine textile industry was considered one of the “Sunset Industry” with its decline in the past decades. The local textile sector together advocates and enthusiasts from the academe, private institutions and social enterprises are working together to bring it back on its feet and secure a bright spot in our economy. There are promising opportunities in the use of indigenous materials such as natural fibers and dyes. The agency is also counting on smart and eco- friendly textiles to elevate the condition of the textile industry. The country has an abundance of natural fibers like abaca, pina, tinalak, bamboo, water lily, etc. which are in demand among textile users. With the help of Nanotechnology, these fibers can be made more pliable and can be weaved to unique textiles. The special products are for niche markets in which products have higher cost than regular items. Examples of these special or premium fabrics are the primatex fabric which are made from ordinary pineapple leaves and another new textile called abaca denim. The continued global growth or demand for denim fabric and call for sustainable products, a potential niche market for textile made from natural fiber is a big opportunity. With the combined efforts of Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) , Department of Science and Technology (DOST), a local textile manufacturer and Japan International Cooperation (JICA), they were able to come up with a new fabric made from abaca and it was called Abaca denim.
