Resource Title A Case study on clothing guidelines to minimize physical irritability on selected adolescents with autism spectrum disorder
Date Issued 29 May 2013
Abstract Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience difficulty in day to day living. Some adolescents with ASD are easily irritated because of problems caused by clothing. This study aimed to identify the clothing requirements of adolescents with ASD that can lessen irritability caused by clothing. This study will benefit adolescents who have autism spectrum disorder by improving their quality of life by providing clothing guidelines for parents or guardians of adolescents with ASD to minimize irritability. The respondents are the four house-parents of the ten male adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The researcher gathered data through interviews with the house-parents and observation activities with the adolescents with ASD. From the data gathered it was found that the adolescent with ASD's functionality and level of sensitivity are two very important indicators as to what kind of clothing adolescents with ASD will feel less irritable in. It was also found that the existing solutions done by the house-parents to address the clothing problems experienced by the adolescents with ASD had gaps. The clothing guidelines formulated in this research fulfilled those gaps to ensure effectiveness of the solutions that address the clothing problems. Moreover, it was found out that clothing not only can contribute in the physical wellbeing of the adolescent with ASD, it can actually improve their psychosocial wellbeing as well. Further studies on clothing for other cases of adolescents with ASD were recommended.
