Resource Title The role of clothing in snap judgments of sexual orientation

Abstract Despite the growing literature on reflexive, intuitive, rapid, or “snap” judgments of sexual orientation on the physical level, little is known about the processes by which these judgments are formed. What do people rely on when making accurate judgments of sexual orientation? The main objective of the study was to figure out the role of clothing in snap judgments of sexual orientation. The study’s specific objectives were to find out if sexual orientation can be determined better than chance through snap judgment, to determine the bases of snap judgments of sexual orientation and to verify if clothing plays a role in snap judgment of sexual orientation. While the study generally involved analysis of snap judgment of sexual orientation, it focused on the male homosexual spectrum of gender. Through the “sexual orientation detection task”, where 33 respondents were asked to guess the sexual orientation of 26 target stimuli by showing them photographs of the targets, the researcher was able to gather the necessary data. The study showed that respondents were not able to accurately judge one’s sexual orientation better than chance, that there were five different bases for snap judgments, which were grouped as associative, clothing, compositional, gestural, and impressionistic. Although there was a low judgment accuracy for homosexual subjects, the research showed that clothing ranked first among the five bases of snap judgment for those who accurately guessed the sexual orientation of the target stimuli, suggesting that clothing did actually play an important role in the accuracy of respondents’ snap judgments of sexual orientation . While the study was able to explore the role of clothing in snap judgments of sexual orientation, the researcher recommends further analysis on which types of clothes make a person look gay. More extensive and in-depth investigations on the other possible bases of one’s judgment on sexual orientation are also recommended.
