Resource Title Artes cultura :cognitive approach to designing the Angono cultural waterfront
Date Issued May 2017
Abstract Angono, notable as the Art Capital of the Philippines, has a long cultural history of cultivating creativity and artistic abilities. It is most known for its many art galleries and street murals that celebrate their rich cultural identity. The town, bounded by Laguna de Bay, once had a vibrant waterfront and a thriving fishing village. However, the current condition of the Angono waterfront, which supposedly should be the area that showcases the culture of the town the most, clearly lacks the cultural character of Angono. A cultural landscape is defined as the result of the interaction between humans and their environment. (UNESCO, 2011) Since the age of globalization and modernization, the application of culture in design has been losing its authenticity as it has become synonymous with cloning the face of global culture itself instead of reflecting a community's individual culture (Carlson, Richards, 2011), resulting to places that lack genuine genius loci. An approach that goes back to the fundamental definition of a cultural landscape, which stresses the importance of people and the community in the shaping of culture and landscape, is necessary. The thesis therefore aims to provide a design proposal for the establishment of the identity of the Angono waterfront through a cognitive approach to design, incorporating the cognitive responses of the users in the cultural redevelopment of the town's lakeside area. The thesis proposes the analysis of the users' emotions, perceptions, and cognition in the design development as an approach to creating landscapes with a strong sense of place and cultural identity. Keywords: cognitive approach, environment psychology, waterfront revitalization, community participation.
