Abstract To help libraries with children’s literature collection and services weigh the various benefits and considerations on the use of traditional and non-traditional storytelling, an experimental study about the comparative effectiveness of the two mentioned storytelling methods is conducted. The research mainly concentrates on the influential characteristics of traditional and non-traditional storytelling to the observational learning grade school students, focusing on the four elements of Bandura’s theory: attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Storytelling attributes that would make storytelling more appealing to students are also taken into account.

Thirty two grade 4 students from Krus na Ligas Elementary School in Quezon City participated in the study. The students were divided into two equal groups with the use of a comprehension test given to them before the actual experiment day. One group was exposed to traditional storytelling wherein a storyteller read a storybook while the other half attended a non-traditional storytelling session by viewing a downloaded android application of the same storybook. Post activity, survey questionnaires, and video recordings were used to gather the needed information.

Data gathered are tabulated and ranked. The study uses the Mann-Whitney U test for its statistical analysis. Results show that both traditional and non-traditional storytelling have positive impact on the behavioural aspect of the respondents. Results from the comprehension test conducted after the storytelling sessions show that non-traditional storytelling participants registered slightly higher scores than the traditional storytelling respondents. With regards to imitating the actions of the characters in the story, the students in the traditional storytelling session had a higher imitation rating compared to those who attended the non-traditional storytelling session.
