Resource Title An evaluation of a library exhibition - the Francisco Arcellana centennial exhibition
Date Issued 08 December 2017
Abstract Organizing exhibitions has been becoming a regular activity for many libraries and archives although it remains a secondary service. When done well, exhibitions can benefit the institution as a way of promotion and an alternative venue for people to get acquainted with archival materials and library collection. Most libraries and archives, however, do not have an exhibition policy to guide them. Holding exhibit evaluations is a good starting point-the results of which can help them build better exhibitions in the future.

This study is an evaluation of the Francisco Arcellana Centennial exhibit which was held at the lobby of the main library building, Gonzales Hall, of the University of the Philippines, Diliman last September 2016. This research sought to accomplish the following objectives: to know why library users came to the exhibit to identify what visitors did in the exhibit to determine the things learned from the exhibit and, to gather visitor feedback on how to improve future exhibitions. Data was gathered on the last week of the month-long run of the exhibit. Visitors were tallied and observed. The overall time spent of a visitor, the exhibit objects they stopped by to take a look at, the path they took, and other observable actions were included in the observation log. A total of 81 visitors came to the exhibit and six of which were interviewed.

The location of the exhibit played a huge part on why visitors came. Since the Main Library stands at the center of the university and caters to the whole university, many people come here daily. The exhibit enjoyed many visitors but it could have had more if it was placed somewhere more visible and had there been promotional materials by the building's entrance. Visitors were seen reading from the panels and short exhibit labels, looking at the three-dimensional objects of the exhibit, talking to other visitors, writing on the guestbook, , and a few were observed taking photos. Respondents said that the exhibit helped them discover who Francisco Arcellana was. When asked how to the exhibit could have been improved, some expressed that the exhibit could have been more visually appealing.

There is an audience for library exhibits. The Gonzales Hall lobby, in particular, is an ideal venue for holding temporary exhibits because of its everyday foot traffic and also as a direct result of the conscious efforts made by the main library staff to make the lobby more inviting to library users. Exhibitions are a part of the evolving functions of libraries and archives and a way of reminding people of the relevance of these institutions. As such, exhibitions should be held under the same standards of quality assigned to other more traditional services.
