Resource Title A study on the sexual health information needs and sexual health information seeking beahvior of undergraduate students of the University of the Philippines Diliman
Date Issued December 2017
Abstract Douglas and Fenton (2013) presented that having a better knowledge of sexual health could lead to having improved programs and projects in educating people who are sexually active, those who are curious about their sexuality, and those who are planning to engage in sexual experience. Additionally, by learning more about sexual health and having an idea on what it is, it would help in letting people understand the concepts of sexuality, sexual relationships, and its role in creating better and efficient prevention programs for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), teen pregnancy issues, and other concerns regarding sexual health.

With that in mind, there have been many reports and studies that showcase the rise of unwanted teenage pregnancies, STDs or STIs, and HIV cases in the Philippines. By having a better understanding of what sexual health is and educating young adults on what sexual health is, it could possibly lead to the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, STDs or STIs, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases as well as having young adults who are more informed about information regarding sexual health. The aim of this study was to find out the sexual health information needs and sexual health information seeking behavior of young adults and to identify the extent of relationship of user context in possibly affecting the two. This was done so that the Philippine society could have an idea on how to guide them in tackling about certain issues or topics about sexual health. This study focused on the sexual health information needs and sexual health information seeking behavior of young adults, specifically, undergraduate students of the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Through the use of an online survey, 206 responses were collected in order to find out what were their sexual health information needs and sexual health information seeking behavior. The data that was collected was then studied and analyzed using tables and graphs, when necessary, and the chi-squared test of independence to see if there were possible relationships with the variables that came from the data.

The results of this study were able to present the sexual health information needs and sexual health information seeking behavior of the undergraduate students. It was also determined that user context of the respondents could also affect and influence the two.
