Resource Title Improving the library space of the Philippine School of Interior Design using design charrette
Date Issued 30 May 2018
Abstract With the Philippine School of Interior Design curriculum' fortification and enhancement of its facilities prompted a need for a library to improve as a place to study that would cope with the students' learning needs. It is in this light that this study focused on how the physical library can be structured, arranged and improved by the important school stakeholders. Due to participatory focus, two groups utilized design charrette method to analyze the data gathered from the semi-structured interview, group discussions, and group reporting. Content and thematic analysis was done to describe and interpret the participants' views in the stages of the activity.

Findings revealed the following: Functional Spaces: (1) The proposed space café found among the students' first favorite topmost functional leisure corners. (2) The proposed rendering and discussion spaces was found first top listed functional space due to the provision of group drafting project activity space. (3) The proposed periodicals and vertical spaces were found to be same level of the first topmost functional spaces due to ephemeral brochures displays (4) The social and silent reading spaces were both found second topmost listed individual and group functional study spaces (5) Providing students' computer workstation functional space, the electronic information space and OPAC spaces found to be second topmost listed priority. (6) The proposed exhibition space was found to be the third topmost potential attraction due to the expected intellectual and relaxing view of yearly winner students' project exhibit. (7) The fourth top functional space was loan table spaces for charging and discharging of library resources. (8) Fifth top listed functional spaces were the blueprint archives and property counter spaces.

Physical Environment and Technology: Natural lighting, furniture such as multifunctional drafting tables, property counter furniture, customized circular shelf, atmosphere such as relaxing ambiance, quiet atmosphere under the physical atmosphere characteristics and technology such as engineering software application, OPAC, printers, additional personal computers were found highly important by the charrette groups to encourage learners to spend more time studying and working more productivity in the library.

Greatest Extent of Involvement of the charrette Participants: The greatest extent of involvement was found on the part of student-participants in the proposed space cafe visioning activity. The Librarians were found to be very vocal when zoning the librarian's workplaces. When it came to educating the non-designers, greatest extent of involvement was found on the part of the architect. In every detail of the library interior design, greatest extent of involvement was found on the part of Interior Designer-participants. Even though resistance to change was manifested in defense of procedural and budget restrictions, greatest extent of involvement was found on the part of the administrators to achieve certain goals.

Proposed Space Design Solution: It was found that utilizing the charrette activity thru the act of making by drawing encouraged participants to engage in every facet of activity and come up with an agreed upon final layout plan illustration.

To address the library's spatial problem. Hence, the following spaces were generated: 1) Reading space layout design solution 2) Rendering space layout design solution 3) Space café layout design solution 4) Social reading space layout design solution 5) Exhibition space layout design solution 6) Vertical and periodicals space layout design solution.
