Abstract | Book loss has always been a problem libraries face. Geared by the latest technology for libraries, book loss can be minimized if not completely eradicated. Given the recommendations to minimize book loss indicated in a study conducted 14 years ago on the prevalence of book loss on both stack systems and the changes in security, policies, and practices carried out by the libraries, the study aims to find out whether these recommendations were implemented by the libraries utilized in the previous study and if there were any effects on the number of losses in both stack systems. The four libraries located in the University of the Philippines Diliman: Main Library Social Sciences Section and College of Engineering Library I, for the open stack libraries, and the Filipiniana Sections of the Main Library and School of Economics, who implement the closed stack arrangement, are the institutions used by this study. Official inventory records from 2001 to present were requested from the libraries. Interviews were also conducted in order to look into these figures and the changes in terms of security, practices, and policies that the libraries underwent throughout the span of 14 years. When the Standard Error of Deviation (SED), Standard Error of the Means (SEM), and the Average Values of the Means (AVM) of the two arrangements were computed, results showed that there is still no significant difference provided that the end results with 0.0178 SED that should reach the 1.68 SED to be rejected. The security system installed and changes that were implemented did not necessarily minimize the occurrence of book loss when the data collected from 2001 and 2015 were compared. Book loss still exists no matter how much the library tries to prevent it from happening, from choosing the right stack arrangement to apply down to installing the latest technology in the market to avoid books being lost in the library. Monitoring book loss in libraries should be kept track in order to |
