Date Issued May 2015
Abstract This study aimed to determine the level of copyright law awareness if six librarians and ninety-eight section heads. unit head librarians and library staff in six selected university libraries in Metro Manila. It also aimed to determine whether the six selected university libraries comply with the copyright law. The information about the subjects' copyright awareness and compliance were obtained through a survey questionnaire with a checklist format. The questionnaire was demonstrated to a panel of faculty members for their remarks and proposals to integrate with the testing. The questionnaire also identified the following: 1. Library policies implemented to prevent copyright violation 2. Copyright promotions being implemented in the libraries 3. Copyright problems librarians encounter and possible solutions. Part of the questionnaire is a copyright law awareness test, wherein most found to be moderately aware (42.3%) on the copyright law. The rest were either highly aware (32.7%) or slightly aware (15.4%) on the copyright law. Majority (76.9%) of the libraries had policies related to copyright policies while forty-one (39.4%) respondents indicated they had verbal / oral copyright policies.

Librarians mentioned that they encounter many copyright problems in their libraries. Most frequently mentioned copyright problems were: 1. student's request for single reproduction of a textbook to avoid purchase of an expensive original copy 2. request to photocopy a portion of a thesis without author's permission and 3. request to supply a chapter of a book for an interlibrary loan service. Current results show that respondents still lack knowledge or awareness on the copyright law. Librarians must equip themselves by being fully aware to fully comply. The findings show the relationship of awareness and compliance match. The level of awareness among librarians and library staff indicates the level of compliance the libraries have. The previous study has the same issue of what should be done in order for the librarians and library staff to be aware or knowledgeable about the copyright law, at the same time, what should be the measures to fully comply with it.

The findings of the study indicated that librarians must be aware or knowledgeable of the copyright law in order for them to fully comply with the requirements of the law. There is still a need to raise awareness and the knowledge among librarians and library staff. Recommendations of the study include: 1. an intensive copyright awareness campaign among libraries 2. an intensive copyright awareness campaign among librarians 3. formulations of specific copyright rules 4. discussion of pertinent provisions of the law during orientation 5. immediate enforcement of copyright policies should be taken up during seminars, conference attended by librarians.
