Resource Title Ergonomic considerations in libraries : a study of the librarians' workplace in Intramuros library consortium
Date Issued 21 July 2014
Abstract The addition of computers in industries facilitates tasks quickly and easily. In libraries, tasks are minimized such that the encoding of data entails the production of the cards and the call number labels simultaneously. However, there have been several downsides to the use of technologies especially that of computers in the workplace. This study sought to determine the work place conditions in relation to the use of technology among member-libraries of the Intramuros Library Consortium. A total of 35 librarians and library staff were surveyed for the study. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the work of Timoteo (2009) and Bugais (2005) on ergonomics were used as references for the existing workplace furnishing and set-up of the member-libraries.

The data gathered from the survey questionnaires and interviews revealed that: 1. Conditions of the lighting is sufficient enough but outside light distracts them air conditioning provides the right temperature but is positioned wrongly giving backaches to the respondents noise in the workplace is always present and disrupts work concentration of an individual 2. Computer workstations, tables, chairs and other library furniture do not fit the library staff 3. Posture of librarians and library staff are affected by the furniture used in the workplace. The use of improper computer workstation, tables and chairs can greatly affect the workers' health and work output 4. The current physical set-up affects how the worker perceives her position or duties in the organization.
