Resource Title A study on the roles of medical head librarians in the knowledge management programs of the selected private tertiary hospitals in the Philippines
Date Issued April 2014
Abstract Knowledge management can make healthcare organization become more collaborative, more transparent, and more proactive. If implemented well, it can transform the health care delivery system over the next few decades into a more cost-effective, error-averse, and accountable public resource (Guptil, 2005). This study focused on the roles of medical head librarians in the knowledge management programs of the (7) seven selected tertiary hospitals in the Philippines : The Medical City - Makati Medical Center, Far Eastern University - Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (NRMF), St. Luke's Medical Center, Fatima University Medical Center, Iloilo Doctors' College for the Iloilo Doctors' Hospital, and University of Perpetual Help - Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical Center).

Aside from the seven (7) medical head librarians, seven (7) KM project heads and one (1) KM practitioner were also interviewed in this research. The DOH list of licensed government and private hospitals in the Philippines was used to determine the potential subjects for the research. Survey questionnaires for the medical head librarians were patterned from the study made by Isola Ajiferuke in 2003 entitled, "Role of Information Professionals in Knowledge Management Programs: Empirical Evidence from Canada". Some entries in Ajiferuke's questionnaire were edited to become more applicable for this study.

The data gathered from survey questionnaires and interview showed that medical head librarians from the selected private tertiary hospitals in the Philippines do have roles in the knowledge management programs of their organizations. These roles can be a leader role, a key role, or a non-key role. Major roles being assigned to the medical head librarians include the design of the information architecture, development of taxonomy, and content management. The minor roles include provision of information for the intranet, distribution of electronic information, and provision of research services. A training module on knowledge management is created for medical libraries as output of this research.
