Abstract This research aimed to identify the top ten competencies of the interior design practice of selected freelance interior designers. Fifty respondents, through quota sampling, were selected. Respondents of the study were graduates from the interior design program of the University of the Philippines, Diliman and practicing the profession within the past three years.
Both qualitative and quantitative methods were utilized in the study. The data gathered from the survey was tabulated, and the weighted mean was computed to get the top competencies based from the list provided. Data derived was based on the adapted NCIDQ list of knowledge and skills, and further examined using PIID Document No.6 and the BSID curriculum checklist.
The study revealed the top ten competencies which consists of the knowledge of the following: (1) furniture, fixtures and equipment; (2) finishes and materials; (3) construction documents; (4) building construction; (5) visual presentation and theories about the relationship between human behavior and the designed environment; skills in: (6) communication; (7) skills in using furniture and equipment; (8)applying the elements and principles of design; and (9) visual presentation and (10) relating and interacting with other concerned professions.
Findings of this study verify that knowing and applying competencies required in actual practice is necessary for the selected freelance designers. It is suggested that the BSID curriculum add more units in construction & interior design practice related courses or balance the amount of focus given in these subjects in relation to the other interior design courses.
