| Abstract | Digital native students are known to learn better when presented with knowledge through familiar media, like video games. Because of that, serious games, which are games with a goal other than entertainment, can be used in introducing LIS concepts to digital natives. However, there is a fear of wasted effort in the creation of serious games due to the significant time and effort investment needed. In this thesis, the creation of a serious game was documented autoethnographically. A serious game in the visual novel genre was created with the educational content being the module “The Contexts and Characteristic of Information” taught in LIS 10 and LIS 51. The process of creation was mainly guided by Winn’s Design, Play, and Experience (DPE) framework, with each layer of the framework being supported by relevant theories. The serious game created was then given to a group of 50 digital native students taking either LIS 10 or LIS 51. After playing the game, the students were required to answer a post-game survey. It was found that a majority of students enjoyed the experience of playing the serious game and that playing the serious game improved their level of confidence in their understanding of the topics taught in the game. |
