Resource Title A feasibility study on the application of Deaf Space Principles on classroom design of Miriam College – Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf high school
Date Issued 7 June 2016
Abstract The study aimed to analyze the applicability of the Deaf Space Principles in the classroom design for high school deaf students in Miriam College - Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf (MC-SAID). As a feasibility study, the baseline information was obtained from the existing theory of the Deaf Space Principles formulated at Gallaudet University. Visual
documentation and personal interviews of selected high school teachers were used to gather data in order to design a theoretically efficient and specialized classroom for deaf students. A total of 3 respondents were chosen through purposive sampling method. Comparison between the Deaf Space Principles and the existing classroom conditions
showed that some principles were already being applied even if MC-SAID has no knowledge on the Deaf Space Principles, through the personal experiences of the educators. Aside from this, acoustical accommodations were found to be most lacking in MC-SAID, a principle that is important not only for sound enhancement, but also for reducing distracting and painful background noise. A design model was then proposed as a possible solution in integrating Deaf Space Principles and as a way to explore other configurations in MC-SAID. Feedback from the respondents showed that while the proposed design would aid the learning of the students, implementation is not seen as a priority due to the added expenses of
proposed acoustical materials. MC-SAID sees their current situation sufficient for learning based on their personal experiences in the classroom. It is recommended to conduct further study on finding cheaper alternative materials to satisfy acoustical accommodation in order to fully adapt the Deaf Space Principles in MC-SAID.
