| Abstract | The Filipino elderly are a marginalized sector of the society and some of their needs are being neglected. Access to information is vital to life in this day and age and accessing information has become a necessary life skill to deal with daily life challenges. The Filipino youth have less problems in information access as they are adept in technology use while the Filipino elderly are facing problems in accessing information because of their age and limited physical mobility. To help address this problem, this study investigated the information needs and information seeking behavior of the Filipino elderly. Face to face interviews with 20 selected elderly informants were living inside the GRACES home for the aged and 12 out of 20 were living outside of GRACES. The data gathered from the interviews revealed that the elderly informants primarily need information on news and current events, leisure types of information like novels, and information about knowledge and skills. Information about food, shelter, clothing, friends, family, healthcare and pension were not that needed by the informants. For their information seeking behavior, it was revealed that the primary information sources of the elderly informants were television, newspaper and consulting information from other people. Biased journalism and failing eyesight which leads to difficulty reading information on books and newspapers were the most popular complaints of the elderly informants when asked about the difficulties they face when they look for information. |
