Resource Title Futures thinking in the University Library Diliman : an analysis of the collective perception of future scenarios until 2025
Date Issued December 2016
Abstract Futures Thinking is a method of envisioning possible futures that an organization could face both in its forthcoming years. This thesis conducted a Futures Thinking study in the University Library Diliman in an effort to contribute to its strategic efforts by presenting to its librarians a set of 26 future scenarios that the Associate of College and Research Librarians (ACRL) developed in 2010. The 26 scenarios were based from upcoming trends and changes in society that would affect all academic libraries. These hypothetical scenarios are evaluated by respondent librarians regarding their a) probability of occurrence, b) impact if it were to occur, c) speed at which it might occur, and d) whether they perceive it as an opportunity or as a threat to their academic library.

A survey containing the 26 futures scenarios (slightly modified for the Philippine context) was given to the respondents. The said respondents are all registered professional librarians employed by the University Library Diliman, whose units include the UPD Main Library and academic libraries of college units within campus.

The result was the collective perception, the University Library Diliman's majority-based evaluation of the 26 future scenarios. Out of the 26 scenarios, the University Library Diliman collectively adjudged 13 out of 26 scenarios to have high probability 21 out of 26 scenarios to have high impact all 26 scenarios as relatively fast occurring and 17 out of 26 scenarios as opportunities while 9 as threats. This study concluded that the librarians of the University Library Diliman have sound awareness and accurate judgement of the 26 possible futures, as evidenced with ongoing and upcoming trends specified in this study.

Ultimately, this study produced a Futures Highlight -- a management document detailing the critical scenarios which were adjudged and revealed to be the highly important and pressing scenarios that the University Library Diliman should consider in its stra
