Resource Title Patterns of advice, trust and communication among the employees of the UP Main Library using Social Network Analysis (SNA)
Date Issued May 2017
Abstract This study aimed to uncover the informal advice, trust and communication networks present among the employees of the UP Main Library. The study used a questionnaire distributed to the entire UP Main library staff population of 57 employees. The questionnaire asked each respondent to identify a co- worker they seek work related/technical advice from, a co-worker they trust to support their career growth and development, and a co-worker they regularly talk to. The results were then subjected to visualization and analysis.

The study discovered that the advice, trust and communication networks among the employees have relatively low density and inclusiveness. In the advice network, the library staff typically refer to those more senior in tenure. However, two of the most sought-after for their advice are junior-level employees. Another finding is that a substantial number of male employees trust nobody to support their career. Although no one person is central to the communication network, a huge percentage of male staff are more comfortable communicating with the opposite sex. In terms of section membership, the employees tend to seek advice and trust individuals from other sections. The explanation for the results and needed intervention are left to the UP Main Library management and further research.
