Resource Title A case study on the perception of selected Philippine librarians on the evolution of the library profession
Date Issued May 2017
Abstract Librarians are required to learn what their users need in order for them to give the best services. Since technologies and the internet are continuously on the rise, it makes librarians change how they provide the information that is asked of them by learning how to integrate them with their library. Instead of making librarians obsolete, let them evolve into something better for the library by combining these concepts in making them possible for the library and introducing the new geek librarian. The geek librarian is defined as a librarian who is a digital technology expert or enthusiast and applies his skills and knowledge into the development and improvement of the library.

The researcher formulated questions that served as an interview guide in conducting the focus interviews. Respondents were chosen with the use of the Snowball Sampling method.

The findings show that the librarians perceive the idea of the geek librarian as a positive label however there are still some negative connotations to it. In spite of the positive perception towards it, current librarians are still hesitant to call themselves as geek librarians. The anti-intellectual atmosphere of the Philippines plays a huge role in the respondents' hesitance to use the label. It is suggested that instead of using geek librarian, "subject specialist" or "subject expert" can be used so as not to have an immediate negative perception to the label but still encompass the same skills, knowledge, and attitudes of a geek librarian.
