Resource Title A descriptive study on proxemics in relation to student perceptions of the physical, social, and cultural components in a selected library
Date Issued 3 June 2016
Abstract This study explored the relation of proxemics to student perceptions and territorial behavior. The focus was on the physical, social, and cultural components present in the interior environment of the College of Home Economics library in UP Diliman. The study used a descriptive research approach, with a combined quantitative and qualitative strategy.
Sampling made use of non-probability purposive method for the selection of fifty survey respondents. Respondents were chosen based on the following criteria: they were students of UP Diliman, and were working inside the CHE library during survey conduction to ensure their familiarity with the library interiors. Covert, non-participant observation happened
simultaneously to note the respondents' treatment of their occupied space. Selection of ten key informants made use of a convenience sampling method. Informants were selected from survey respondents who were willing and available to elaborate on their answers.
Results showed that furniture selection and placement kept users within the personal distance range. This was below the stated social distance range based on proxemics (Hall, 1966), as is favorable for social spaces such as a library. Intrusions upon physical and auditory privacy were inevitable when in close proximity with others. This was especially true in a library communal table. Intrusions upon personal space boundaries happened, which caused territorial behavior to manifest. There were negative effects on library users such as distraction, frustration, and lack of motivation. It was through the users’ experience that the desire for more private rooms for group and individual study arose. More table and seating options were also considered beneficial. A user-based approach in designing a library ensures that all spaces cater to users' specific needs.
