Resource Title | Bazarista Alfresco: Creating Outdoor Bazaar Landscapes in Metro Manila |
Date Issued | March 2011 |
Abstract | Filipinos love shopping and it’s no surprise that they are very fond of bazaars or tiangges. Since the advent of the weekend bazaar craze in Metro Manila, there has been the apparent need for more bazaar venues. Consequently, numerous bazaar and tiangge centers have been set up. However, these venues fail to address the needs of Filipino shoppers, and cater to the unique Filipino shopping culture and behavior. This thesis identifies and illustrates the observed trends and behaviors of bazaars and Filipino shoppers in Metro Manila. Based on research and the observations, guidelines for designing bazaar spaces in Metro Manila were formulated. The thesis provides a landscape design solution for addressing the need for more and effective bazaar venues. By integrating the research findings with landscape architecture, the design solution offers a whole new kind of outdoor bazaar venue that is ideal for the Filipino market and retailers alike. The Bazarista Alfresco is an outdoor landscaped bazaar venue that successfully meets the identified needs and behaviors of the Filipino shopping market, combining function and leisure. By employing landscape architectural techniques and strategies in site planning, space programming, and locating site amenities and elements, the Bazarista Alfresco gives both the Filipino shoppers and retailers a whole new bazaar shopping (and selling) experience. |
