Abstract | Architecture always has been in some of its aspects, a branch of psychological research (Canter, 1974). This design thesis revisits the metaphor, poetry and power that architecture has on its viewer. The “viewer”, in this study, was not confined to the inhabitants of the building (Prina, 2008). Like research, design does not take place at one moment in time and on the basis of one clearly defined set of decisions. By acknowledging the design process as a parallel field of applied research, the thesis became a validation of the power of architecture to reinforce the identity of an institution. The thesis’ aim was to aid the UP Asian Institute of Tourism on its quest to strengthen its niche in the University. The premise is that a structure’s totality can be envisioned as a response for the ultimate need of creating this architectural identity. Additionally, the complex was designed to be as effective to its users as it is to the passerby who will be able to recognize the architecture as an institutional building that is still part of UP. |
