Date Issued 30 June 2021
Abstract This qualitative case study aimed to determine the effects of the absence of “dirty kitchens” in selected Filipino middle-class families’ condominium units in Metro Manila. The activities done in the "dirty kitchen" were identified. Then, changes in the respondents' kitchen practices from using a "dirty kitchen" to using a condominium kitchen were xamined. This study also determined whether the provided technology was sufficient, and the solutions done to consider the socio-cultural practices were recognized. Interviews were conducted through audio calls and questionnaires were given hrough email. Cultural Relativism theory was utilized in determining the suitability of the interior design of condominium kitchens for the families. Key findings of this study suggest that while there was freedom of movement and of food choices in the “dirty kitchen,” the condominium kitchen limited and changed the cultural preferences of the respondents. The factors were the lack of space and storage, insufficient ventilation, condominium rules, and limited choices of furniture and cookware. The families were able to provide solutions to be able to cook and do food preparations more efficiently. The sociocultural practices of Filipinos in the kitchen, which are the concepts of hierarchy of spaces and having privacy, were not considered. This research concludes that the Cookie-cutter layouts provided for the respondents' condominium kitchens did not cater to their cultural and socio-cultural practices. Thus, the respondents experienced uncomfortable cooking experiences. A reflection on cookie-cutter designs in condominium kitchens in relation to Filipino cultural and socio-cultural practices is needed to promote a kitchen space design that is efficient for the needs of Filipino families. Condominium dwellers may learn from the solutions done by the participants in this study to be able to adapt to the challenges in their kitchen spaces.
