Resource Title Noah’s Park: Transforming a Brownfield Site into a Mixed-Use Development
Date Issued March 2011
Abstract Generally, a landscape development derives its design from the cultural roots of a locality, that landscape of any quality and extent needs a meaning, which belongs to the cultural spirit of the past. These qualities make theses spaces significant. The importance of a space is not necessarily defined by the structures built on it but on the historic events that took place on the site. If these spaces are of importance, why destroy it?
Brownfield sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially in places where demand for residential and commercial property is high. Brownfield sites are considered for redevelopment of not only housing and commercial buildings, but also as open spaces for recreation, conservation, woodland and other community areas.
This study centered on the redevelopment of a brownfield site that is the former Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery. The sugar refinery has a long and rich history of its own. It was the only one among the sugar refineries in the country that was situated in Metro Manila. Its strategic location and daily capacity of 7,000 50-kilo bags made it a vital component of the private business sector and the government in the thrusts for a national economic recovery and progress. In 1997, the refinery stopped operating and since then it remained shut down. The challenge of this study is how to convert the land into a landscape development that would benefit the community while recognizing its industrial heritage through landscape architecture. The transformation of the sugar refinery into a mixed-used development shall entail sustainable approaches while promoting memorialization of the site.
This thesis hopes to relay the message of reusing brownfield sites rather than seek out “greenfields” or undeveloped land while commemorating the history of the place.
