Abstract Embedded in the development of the Filipiniana dress are the practices and the sensibilities of Filipinos under the rule of two colonial powers. To learn about the Filipiniana dress strengthens our national identity and to wear it helps preserve our culture and traditions. Several books, like the Patterns for the Filipino Dress (1992) and Fashionable Filipinas (2015),
recount the colorful historical development and praised the beauty of the Filipiniana dress. However, little is written about its technical properties, specifically its sewing construction. This study proposes to explore the sewing construction details of the baro’t saya through the examination of selected ensembles in the UP College of Home Economics Costume Museum collection, for the future prospects of developing a sewing construction reference for it. Properties that affect the longevity of a garment, such as seam types, seam finishes, stitch density, and stitch class (Ahmed et al., 2014), will be observed and documented. Seam deteriorations will also be analyzed to determine their probable causes considering factors such as seam location, fabric degradation, and sewing construction. As a Clothing Technology student, identifying the probable causes of seam deterioration is the first step in improving the quality of the sewing construction, to be able to produce more durable and lasting baro’t says. Due to Covid-19 pandemic quarantine restrictions, this paper focused on proposing the methodology for the identification of the sewing construction and seam deterioration of the baro’t saya. The activity may be pursued by the next Clothing Technology research students or endorsed to the Costume Museum for the practicum activities of Clothing Technology classes.
