Resource Title Attitudes of Selected Employers Towards the Employment of Trained Physically Disabled
Date Issued May 1973
Abstract This is a study of 50 employers which sought to (1) describe their attitudes toward the employment of trained physically disabled, who acquired their disabilities before employment, and (2) to identify the factors associated with the employer’s attitudes. The respondents were selected by random sampling from 142 private firms in the greater Manila area, which had been contacted by the National Rehabilitation Training Center between January 1, 1968 to December 31, 1970.
A combination of a close and open-ended questionnaire was used as the instrument to gather data related to the demographic characteristics of these employers and a five-point scale to measure their attitudes. The study utilized a total of 26 measures related to four indicators of employer attitudes: 1) efficiency of disabled workers’ working capacity; 2) personnel problems involved in the employment of the disabled; 3) employers’ prejudice on the employment of the disabled workers; and 4) existing laws and regulations pertinent to the employment of the disabled. A five-point scale (strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagreed, strongly disagree) was employed to measure the degree of arrangement of the employers.
The findings of this study showed the following:
Demographic Characteristics. Ninety-six percent of the employers are holders of BS or BA degree with 34 percent of them coming from personnel management staff. Ninety-eight percent are Filipinos. The number of disabled workers who have been employed by the firms (12) is insignificant when compared to the total number of employees of these firms (43,357). The efficiency and physical strength of the disabled were the main reasons advanced for their employment.
Employers’ Attitudes. It appears from this study that the employers who agreed on the advantages of employing disabled workers over the able-bodied, such as the low turn-over and absenteeism rates, still hold some reservations in hiring the trained physically disabled. The reluc
