Resource Title Silong : the interior renovation of selected residential households living in a flood-prone area after typhoon Ulysses
Date Issued 22 June 2021
Abstract This research explores the interior renovation experiences of selected residential households living in a flood-prone area after the Typhoon Ulysses. A qualitative approach was used in analyzing the behavior and the different responses of the selected households who went through the flooding. The aim of this study was to describe the condition of each household, analyze the cleaning process and the renovation of the space, as well as to identify the design choices made, and the factors that contributed to their selected design strategy. The chosen locale for this study is Provident Village, Marikina City, and the study was limited only to a maximum of five residential households, residing in at least a two-storey unit. Using the Theories of Place Attachment, Practical Needs and Supportive Design, the study focused on the interior alterations done on the ground floor common areas only of the chosen households, and the scope of the study was limited only to the furniture arrangement, the interior finishes, and the materials of existing furniture pieces.
Results revealed that most of the changes made were directed on the durability of the materials and furniture pieces. Findings suggest which existing materials and finishes were durable enough to endure the flood waters. Responses also showed that restoring the old configuration of their interiors helped the respondents in their recovery, as it provided them the feeling of warmth and comfort. Lastly, the study showed that a big factor that contributed to their design choices is their financial capacity, as the Typhoon happened during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is recommended to conduct a similar study at least a year after the onset of the disaster, in order to assess changes in their homes when their financial capacities and adjustments may have improved.
