| Abstract | This study was an attempt to identify and describe the continuing education needs of medical social workers employed in direct service practice in selected national government hospitals of Metro Manila. It sought to answer the following questions: a. What is their concept of continuing education in relation to their professional growth? b. What are their continuing education needs? c. What continuing education programs are provided by the hospitals to medical social workers? d. What continuing education programs are provided by other agencies to medical social workers? e. What is the extent of participation of respondents in the planning, implementation and evaluation of continuing education program? The respondents of this study are forty-three (43) medical social workers in direct service practice sampled from the thirteen (13) national government hospitals located in the four (4) cities of Metro Manila namely; Caloocan, Pasay, Manila, and Quezon City. This is a descriptive study and the main instrument used in data gathering was the interview schedule. Descriptive methods of analysis such as frequency and percentage distribution, mean weighted value and ranking were used. The findings of the study revealed the following: 1. Medical social workers generally agree on the concept of continuing education as a means of enhancing their knowledge, skills and attitudes through their participation in seminars, conferences, meetings and sharing sessions. In turn, this would ensure the more effective and efficient delivery of social services. 2. The medical social workers in direct service practice have numerous continuing education needs under the areas of knowledge, skills, methods, approaches and programs which were valued as "average" or "greatly needed" for continuing education.
