Abstract This study looked into the background information on professionally trained social work graduates of the University of Papua New Guinea. It described their job placements and also sought to determine the graduates' nature and degree of job satisfaction. Finally, an analysis of the implications of the findings of this study to the social work curriculum was sought.

The study is significant to social work educators who may use the findings in determining the kind of curriculum changes that may be instituted. The social work school can benefit from the result by using inferences for admission policies and job placement procedures. Finally, the policy-makers especially in the Public Service Commission may use the findings in formulating guidelines for social work manpower development in the country.

The general methodology used in the study was descriptive utilizing normative survey techniques. Four questionnaires were utilized to obtain information. The main one was directed towards the social work graduates in order that information may be obtained on the specific objectives of the study. Three other questionnaires were directed towards the graduates, the social work educators and the administrators to obtain information on these groups' attitudes towards social work and social workers.

A little more than half of the sixty-four graduates of the University of Papua New Guinea Social Work Programme responded to two questionnaires. Two educators and four administrators also responded to the questionnaires. Frequency distribution, ranking and percentages were used in the data analysis. Open-ended questions, however, were content analyzed.

The findings in the study are that most of the social work graduates are married males between 23-25 years of age and had graduated between 1970-1980.
