| Abstract | CATHOLIC CHARITIES is a "family welfare agency" organized in 1953 to provide not only for the spiritual needs of poor individuals and families but also for the material, through the establishment of social services, educational aid, vocational guidance and training, job placement, and religious services. "Social Work" methods are employed in rendering these services. This present study is an attempt to define the expressed and unexpressed needs of the clients of Catholic Charities, and to determine whether or not the above-mentioned services adequately meet those needs. To achieve this objective, this writer gathered data on the socio-economic characteristics of the clients to have a better knowledge and understanding of their problems. The process of serving the clients was evaluated by the use of questionnaires, and by home visits and interviews with social workers and their clients. The significance of this study lies in providing guide-lines for agency-administrators in the planning, policy-formulation, organization and implementation of agency-programs as well as in the choice of the proper social-work methods to be utilized for an effective program-implementation. Out of the 1,235 cases listed from September 1, 1965 to September 30, 1966, only 247 (20 per cent) availed themselves of the agency's services for the first time and social workers had three or more contacts with them during the period of assistance. Random proportional sampling was done on one-fourth of the 247 cases and 62 clients responded; 12 social-workers were servicing these clients. Some of the writer's significant findings were: (1) that economic dependency due to underemployment or unemployment was the immediate problem (sixty-one clients) at intake; (2) that the services often requested were material assistance (43 per cent) and vocational training (50 per cent); (3) that there was a need for an effective interpretation of the agency's services; (4) that, at intake, the unexpre |
