Abstract This exploratory study has sought to determine what practice were undertaken in the placement of unrelated children and what steps were taken by the adoptive parents for the adopted children in preparation for the event. The researcher hopes that future research on the advantages and disadvantages of independent adoptions may provide further insights into the problem so as to serve as basis for determining both agency policy and practice.

A sample of 44 adoption petitions granted by the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court was drawn. This number represented 25 percent of the total unrelated children.

Random sampling was used in the selection of the unrelated adoptions. A study of all existing pertinent documents, records and reports at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court was undertaken. Personal interviews with each of the selected respondents were also carried out. A structured interview schedule and outline were devised for the guidance of the researcher.

The result of the study reveals that all the legitimate children were placed out directly by their biological parents. It is significant that only 1 out of 8 of the children was placed out by private social welfare institutions. Not one among the children under study was placed out by the public welfare agency, the Social Welfare Administration.

Poverty and shame because of illegitimacy were the common denominators to the problems of the biological parents. The majority of the adoptive parents suffered from organic Infertility.

It was noted that in most instances the adoptive mothers themselves were responsible for initiating the idea to adopt children. Some of the children were legally adopted within a year after placement, while the court proceedings of the rest dragged on for many years. More than one-half of the children were not aware of their adoption. The problems presented by the majority of the parents centered on the negative attitude of relatives toward the adopted children.
