| Abstract | A study on the group approach in working with sexually abused children uncovered the operation of therapeutic or curative factors, which comprise the dynamics of the group program. These are as follows: a) instillation of hope; b) catharsis; c) feeling free to spontaneously self-express; d) group cohesiveness; e) imparting of information; t) development of socializing techniques; g) universality; h) altruism; i) transference; j) corrective recapitulation of the primary group; k) imitative behavior; I) interpersonal learning; and m) the group as a source of support in times of need. These factors facilitated change in the children towards treatment/rehabilitation from the effects of sexual abuse. These therapeutic factors facilitated the attainment of four (4) goals which are necessary to bring about treatment: 1) confronting the abuse experience; 2) expressing one's thoughts and feelings to others; 3) accepting the experience of abuse as part of one's past; and 4) setting boundaries and directions for one's self. The attainment of these goals in turn facilitated the following effects in the children: 1) enhanced self-concept; 2) enhanced self-esteem; 3) self-insight; 4) experiencing the depth of one's emotions; 5) less guilt/shame/depression; and 6) less hostility/mistrust. In effect, the approach enhanced the children's social functioning. It has therefore been recommended that a group approach where these curative factors are part of the intervention program's dynamics be applied to the treatment of sexually abused children. Such an approach will facilitate change in the children. The roles of the social worker in the attainment of treatment goals are crucial. One of these is her being a discussion leader wherein she has to master the art of discussion.
