| Abstract | Medical-social service is one of the innovations adopted in the public health program of Manila. It was instituted with the aim of approaching the patient's need in its totality. The social worker joined the health team with the expectation of her contribution to the health objectives, through the implementation of the social service program in the health centers. There is a need to assess the program if only to insure that the program is serving its purpose. The study was able to point out that the social service in the health center was actually a multipurpose program. The study further indicated the inadequacy of the program to meet even the specific needs of the families in times of illness, both in terms of direct medicinal assistance and casework. The program, consequently, suffered from a lack of acceptance resulting from unawareness of the people about the program and non-conformity with family values in meeting family problems. For the improvement of the different services program as a whole, the student suggested: (1) the extension of the medical-social service in health programs dealing with illnesses of far-reaching social implications, (2) the assignment of professionally traine |
