Abstract The research attempts to assess the Peer Support Project in HIV/AIDS prevention for commercial sex workers of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, run by The NGO Save The Children Fund (UK) in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam.

The study used the survey method. A survey of 33 project beneficiaries was conducted to determine how the project influenced the target group's knowledge of AIDS and its transmission routes, attitude toward AIDS and practice of safer sex. The case studies on two peer educators highlighted the process involved.

The significant results emerging from the study revealed the following:
1. When peer education was first introduced in Vietnam, the development of human resources was given emphasis. Learning by doing is utilized to get the job done in responding to both the need of project and the urgent need to control the spread of the disease.
2. The outreach-based approach is the main strategy of the project. It employs the basic principles of Social Work practice such as confidentiality, acceptance, respect, self-determination and nonjudgement at attitude. Problem-solving is carried out by support services which deal with many problems including specific health-related problems.
3. Results of the survey reveal that only 33% of the beneficiaries take precaution by regularly using condom with their customers and 24% use the tool with their husbands and boyfriends. This suggests that the practice of safer sex among sex workers is still low although their knowledge of AIDS is adequate and their attitude towards condom usage is completely positive. This knowledge and attitude, however, are not usually translated to effective practice.
4. Cost-effectiveness of the peer group project, as a method of preventing the spread of AIDS, is observed in this study.
