Abstract The study aims to determine the perception of the Houseparents, their family, the multidisciplinary team and the children under their care regarding the role of Houseparents in child care management and to ascertain the factors in the personality and environment of the Houseparents that facilitate or hinder their role performance. Specifically, the following issues were addressed: houseparent's role perception — Houseparents' own perception, their families, multidisciplinary team and the children; and factors in the working environment of the Houseparents that affect their role performance. The study was conducted at Hospicio de San Jose, a child caring facility located in Manila run by the Daughters of Charity Sisters Respondents of this study include 31 Houseparents, 21 children ages 10 and above who are currently under the custody of the said institution, 18 family members of Houseparents, and the agency's multidisciplinary team. Data on the role perception of Houseparents and the perception of their families about this role were gathered thru interview. Rapid Assessment Instruments were also utilized, which includes Willingness to Care Scale, Role Perception Scale and Index of Job Satisfaction Scale. Likewise, Rapid Assessment Instruments were also employed to identify children's perception of the Houseparents' role which includes Satisfaction with Life Scale, Index of Family Relations Scale, General Perception of Life Scale, and Provision of Social Support Scale. Multidisciplinary team views were gathered thru a Focused Group Discussion.

Results of the study show that Houseparents perceive their role as substitute parents to the children in care and that their task entails both physical, which concerns assisting children satisfy their daily needs and psycho-emotional involvement, which includes creatively and effectively responding to the children's behavioral needs and provision of emotional stability.
