Abstract The counselor's role expectations of the school social worker must coincide with the school social worker's perceptions of his on role when they work as a team, and vise versa. Otherwise, conflict or inharmonious relations may arise due to such inconsistent expectations and perceptions between these two members of the school helping team.

The Q-sort technique and a confidential questionnaire were used for data-gathering, while the statistical tools used for analysis were the Pearsonian Product-Moment Coefficient of Correlation and the Regression Analysis. Four hypotheses guided the study: harmonious relations between school social workers and guidance counselors depend upon non-overlapping functions; overlapping of functions is associated with such social factors as: academic training, age, length of contact and work experience; the experience of working together as a team is expected to minimize overlapping functions and produce harmonious relations, and the increase in interactions between school social workers and guidance counselors leads to an increase in their liking for each other.

Findings showed a significant positive correlation between work experience and overlapping functions in the case of counselors and the combined scores of counselors and school social workers (as a team). This result gave a partial support to the hypothesis that overlapping of functions is associated with such social factors as academic training, age, length of contact and work experience. A multiple correlation of work experience, length of contact and academic training, all taken, with overlapping functions was similarly found to be significant for the counselors and school social workers, treated as a team.

On the whole, the findings indicated that higher academic training, more work experience, and longer contacts or associations in the course of performing their jobs do not produce a clearer concept of the distinct roles of the school social worker and the school couns
