Abstract This is an exploratory study, initially attempted, to discover some problems affecting college students in the University of the Philippines, particularly those staying in the residence halls at Diliman campus. It is specifically focused on determining problem areas that could cause disequilibrium in total social functioning. The study also relates these problems with the students' knowledge and use of the University's auxiliary facilities and services.

An inventory of the students' problems is drawn through the use of a self-administered questionnaire adapting the Mooney Problem Check List for college students. The checklist includes three hundred thirty problem-items covering eleven problem-areas on Personal adjustment to one's social environment. A knowledge of students' problems will guide school administrators, educators, policy-makers, student-service program coordinators and social welfare workers in encouraging, providing and implementing programs of services that will promote and enhance students' welfare.

The findings show that primary problem-area of concern to students is adjustment to college work. The under-graduate students are concerned with problems- in adjustment to college work, social-recreational activities and personal-psychological relations while the graduate students are concerned with the curriculum and teaching procedures.

The questionnaire results indicate that resident students often used the services of three-auxiliary facilities, namely, the library, the health unit and the food service. The library and the health unit were consistently rated as very good facilities.

Since adjustment to college work is the major concern of students and that this problem-area covers varied aspects of personal problems, this study recommends the establishment of a school social work service to help assist students and complement the need for specialized counseling through the social work approach.
