Abstract Abstract

Private nonprofit higher educational institutions (HEIs) share the government’s responsibility in providing quality higher education that will contribute to nation-building. The literature and conceptual framework in this qualitative research proposed that this can be accomplished by improving the HEIs’ operational quality through the use of management control systems (MCS). These HEIs, however, need to evolve their MCS as they undergo stages of development, which involve academic milestones as well as MCS transformation milestones. The management control systems transform into formal systems to better equip HEIs in fulfilling their quality goals. This was validated in the study of the MCS transformation experiences of three homegrown, private nonprofit HEIs in the province of Pampanga.

The case study frameworks of Creswell (2013) and Yin (2009) were used to generate the results of this study. From the results, the MCS transformation model for private nonprofit HEIs was developed. The study revealed the significant role of transformed MCS in (a) facilitating organizational growth; (b) attaining operational quality to provide better and relevant academic services; (c) fostering empowerment, motivation, and values development among school heads; and (d) in promoting the development of the HEIs’ capacity to respond positively to the opportunities presented by their external environment.
