Abstract | The research determines the financial, sources, management and strategies of UP college students, and the influence of gender and socioeconomic status. Data were collected from 105 2nd and 3rd year College of Home Economics undergraduate students from the University of the Philippines Diliman using survey questionnaire. From the 105, 30 were chosen for the face-to-face interview schedule. Respondents were selected through multistage random sampling. Descriptive statistics and thematic approach was used for quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Results show that parents are the main financial source of college students, regardless of socioeconomic status. A close or good relationship with the source instills in the student wise spending, planning and budgeting habits. A regular schedule of receiving allowance weekly leads to better management of finances. Despite the claims of receiving enough allowance, most college students still encounter shortage of money, and thus employ different strategies to handle or avoid such encounters, such as budgeting and planning, saving, and self-control. The researchers recommend college students to save, include unexpected events and activities in the allocation of their allowance, and make the most out of supplemental resources. The family, especially parents are encouraged to foster a close relationship with their child to inculcate value for money, trust, teamwork, wise spending and budgeting. Schools should take the students into consideration when setting requirements that involve financial input and in providing training and learning experiences regarding financial management to help prepare them for life after college. Professionals and researchers are encouraged to do further studies on adolescent financial management, particularly on the influence of age, peers, and other social environments. |
