| Abstract | The Philippines lagged in averting child malnutrition in part due to suboptimal complementary feeding practices. Complementary feeding is a critical period of a child’s life because malnutrition during this period have long term irreversible consequences. Home-based food fortifications (i.e., micronutrient powders/MNPs) are considered a short-term strategy to improve the quality of complementary diet. Meanwhile, a food-based approach is a long-term strategy to address this concern. However, the high variability of local diets warrants population-specific recommendations and consider socio-cultural and economic factors. Hence, an understanding of the context of complementary feeding for a given community is warranted to develop appropriate recommendations on improving complementary diet using local foods. This study evaluates the use of non-seasonal locally available pulses from Betwagan in Sadanga, Mountain Province as suitable raw material for the development of complementary food for children 6-24 months. In doing so, a mixed methods research design was employed to understand the gaps, challenges, and opportunities in improving the complementary feeding; the challenges and opportunities for pulses as a complementary food; and suitable strategies to enhance the nutritional contribution of pulses in the diet of iBetwagan children. The one-month data collection period was carried out from October to November in 2018 but intermittent visits continued. This study employed surveys and interviews among mothers, health workers, and local farmers; dietary assessment of children 6-24 months; observation; and desk review to answer the research questions. The findings of this thesis showed suboptimal complementary feeding practices among iBetwagan mothers due to untimely initiation of complementary foods and poor dietary quality. Infant and maternal factors determine the period of initiating complementary foods while resource availability, infant readiness, and preparat |
