Resource Title RECOV: The new Philippine Orthopedic Center
Date Issued March 2014
Abstract The main objective of this study is to explore the possibility of redefining the image of the national orthopedic hospital from one that provides basic healthcare services to one which recognizes the role of the natural environment and social support
to the recovery of patients. By providing alternative venues for healing, the new Philippine Orthopedic Center aims to offer Filipinos with a healing environment that extends its reach to the natural realm, focusing on respite outdoor spaces integrated into the built environment.
The concept ReCOV, which stands for Regenerative Cooperation, Optimal Life Space and Vitality, was applied in the design of the new Philippine Orthopedic Center. Creating a fluid transition from the indoor to the outdoor is among the major components of the ReCOV approach, thus making the new POC a “breathing building”. The application of ReCOV to the design of the new Philippine Orthopedic Center is instrumental in addressing the design problem and highly assistive in bringing about the delivery of a therapeutic environment for the orthopedic population. Thus, the new Philippine Orthopedic Center goes beyond the usual medical facility by utilizing the natural environment as additional avenues for healing, implementing a holistic approach to its purpose; an icon of what and how government- run infrastructures could be.
