| Abstract | The marketplace has always been a part of what constitutes the community such as a town or municipality. Not only a place where people go to for most of their basic needs; the marketplace is considered an important part of a community’s culture and economy. But with poor maintenance and with the emergence of large supermarkets which offer cleanliness and comfort while shopping, especially in rural areas, people have become less dependent on their local public market for their basic needs. The public market of Sta. Maria, Bulacan is an example of a market that has deteriorated through time. Put up in 1985, the market structure is constructed with steel and concrete and equipped with modern utilities such as electrical lighting, drainage and water supply, but with very poor maintenance and the influx of informal vendors, the market now projects an image of squalor and blight instead of an image of local economic development, which discourages some buyers from patronizing the market. But although faced with these problems, many people still tolerate the poor conditions of the market for one reason; the market is still the only place where they can buy, and even bargain for, fresh food products at cheap prices. The goal of this thesis project is to improve the conditions in the Sta. Maria Public Market and to introduce a night market that would accommodate new activities for the local community.
